A Call to Persevere


Persevering in new life of faith 

(Jesus’ messages that God is reaching out to all people was not just for the purpose of us being able to look forward to entering heaven at the end of an earthly life. His mission was to bring about for humanity a reconciliation with the Father that allows us, through him, to receive a new life beginning now that will be also eternal. Not only can we be ‘declared’ right in his eyes (because of Jesus paying the penalty for our alienation from Him) but also we are ‘made’ into right living people so that we can maintain a right relationship with him that brings his goodness and continued blessing into our daily lives, even while we continue to live in this fallen world.


Through a response of belief in our heart we can receive by faith a deposit from God of his Spirit coming to live within us so as to begin a process of transformation where we start taking on more and more of the very nature of God, rather than continuing to live out of our old human nature that was the source of our problem in the first place. Thus God’s ‘righteousness’ begins to be not only legally ‘imputed’ but also ‘imparted’ with significant potential for benefit in our day to day living and overall quality of life.


These benefits of ‘living by faith’ continue to be ‘outworked’ as our relationship with Him begins to grow and develop. Along with a change of heart and inner transformation that is taking place, there are often old patterns of attitude and thinking (called ‘strongholds’ in the bible) as well as emotional responses and behavioural habits that sometimes need to be worked through. As this happens we can begin to more fully enjoy an improved ability to live rightly by making good choices that bring added blessing into our lives.

In the bible this process is sometimes referred to as a ‘renewing of the mind’ or as developing the ‘mind of Christ’ or learning to ‘stand firm’. As we commit to, and engage in, learning how to do these things, we become more fully able to enter into, and benefit from, the new life God is offering to us.

They strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God. Acts 14:22 NLT

Therefore, brothers and sisters, use more effort to make God's calling and choosing of you secure. If you keep doing this, you will never fall away. Then you will also be given the wealth of entering into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1: 10‑11 GWT

Of course we are human, but we don't fight like humans. The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people's defences, that is, their arguments and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10: 3‑5 GWT

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Finally, receive your power from the Lord and from his mighty strength. Put on all the armour that God supplies. In this way you can take a stand against the devil's strategies. This is not a wrestling match against a human opponent. We are wrestling with rulers, authorities, the powers who govern this world of darkness, and spiritual forces that control evil in the heavenly world. For this reason, take up all the armour that God supplies. Then you will be able to take a stand during these evil days. Once you have overcome all obstacles, you will be able to stand your ground. So then, take your stand! Fasten truth around your waist like a belt. Ephesians 6: 10‑14 GWT 

You will be hated by everyone because of me [Jesus], but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:22 NIV

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived —
the things God has prepared for those who love him”—

these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments for

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”

The Virtue of Perseverance

(The new life offered begins with a choice, an instant transaction of the heart, and starts a journey of discovery and learning. To fully experience this new life with God requires that we stay the distance and continue learning His ways in obedience and trust. Day by day there may be seasons of refreshing, along with times of setback and challenge, hence the need for perseverance.)

Rewards of Persevering

Perseverance in Right Living

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5: 16‑25 NIV

He also gave apostles, prophets, missionaries, as well as pastors and teachers as gifts [to his church]. Their purpose is to prepare God's people to serve and to build up the body of Christ. This is to continue until all of us are united in our faith and in our knowledge about God's Son, until we become mature, until we measure up to Christ, who is the standard.

Then we will no longer be little children, tossed and carried about by all kinds of teachings that change like the wind. We will no longer be influenced by people who use cunning and clever strategies to lead us astray. Instead, as we lovingly speak the truth, we will grow up completely in our relationship to Christ, who is the head. He makes the whole body fit together and unites it through the support of every joint. As each and every part does its job, he makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

So I tell you and encourage you in the Lord's name not to live any longer like other people in the world. Their minds are set on worthless things. They can't understand because they are in the dark. They are excluded from the life that God approves of because of their ignorance and stubbornness. Since they no longer have any sense of shame, they have become promiscuous. They practice every kind of sexual perversion with a constant desire for more. But that is not what you learned from Christ's teachings. You have certainly heard his message and have been taught his ways. The truth is in Jesus. You were taught to change the way you were living. The person you used to be will ruin you through desires that deceive you. However, you were taught to have a new attitude. You were also taught to become a new person created to be like God, truly righteous and holy.

So then, get rid of lies. Speak the truth to each other, because we are all members of the same body. Be angry without sinning. Don't go to bed angry. Don't give the devil any opportunity [to work]. Thieves must quit stealing and, instead, they must work hard.

They should do something good with their hands so that they'll have something to share with those in need. Don't say anything that would hurt [another person]. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you. Don't give God's Holy Spirit any reason to be upset with you. He has put his seal on you for the day you will be set free [from the world of sin]. Get rid of your bitterness, hot tempers, anger, loud quarrelling, cursing, and hatred. Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ. Ephesians 4: 11‑32 GWT

Downsides to not Persevering

(As we discover in most areas of life when we are seeking to make gains, there is usually a resistance and things that need to be overcome if we are to keep moving forward toward success. This also occurs when we are seeking to grow in our relationship with God. What it often means is that there are lifestyle changes that need to be made to help us with things we are needing to learn. While we have many promises of God’s help available to us always, success can depend on continuing to do practical things that help make sure we do not lose focus and slip back into old ways and habits. To prevent this happening, we need to keep moving ahead in developing those internal qualities that help us grow strong. There is a dynamic about faith that needs nurturing. If we are not growing and developing in it, all too soon we may find it slipping away.)

God “will repay each one according to [their] deeds.” To those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honour, and immortality, He will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger. Romans 2: 5‑8 BSB

Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’ ”

And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? Evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3: 13‑15 NIV


Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!


Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5: 7‑11 NIV

Setbacks and failure: all shortcomings dealt with

(Our decision to respond to God and begin a relationship with Him can seem to waver at times. We may feel drawn towards him and yet at the same time feel drawn in an entirely opposite direction. We may find an old temptation rearing its head or there may be a chronic one that we have difficulty in overcoming. We may encounter challenging circumstances that bring discouragement or disillusionment, or we may have doubts reoccur where we cannot find an answer that will settle the issue in our mind. We may become stressed and perhaps regress, relapse or fail in a way that fills us with shame and condemnation, where we feel that we have not only let ourselves down, but also God rather badly, perhaps irretrievably.

Please be assured; God knows of our vulnerability to all of these situations and his provision, willingness and ability to help are more than adequate to lift us up again and bring us through such episodes if we will respond in faith and allow him to help with the work of restoration which is his desire for us.

It is extremely important in such circumstances that we do not allow our natural sense of guilt or discouragement to cause us to withdraw from Him. This can draw us into a downward spiral of isolation and alienation and away from Him who is our greatest source of true hope - he whose mercy and grace are ‘more than sufficient’ and never run out.

We do not need to fear our own weaknesses but should aim to develop the humility that admits to the limitations of our own strength and our total need his help. We need to to be ever ready to ‘receive’ from him the forgiveness that he constantly and so willingly offers.

There are many passages from the bible that give reassurances of the restoration and hope that can come out of situations of defeat. It is worth exploring his Word at such times to find some of the many helpful references of which there are sample listed below. Learning to read them often and declaring our belief in them can impart faith and be a source of great hope for anyone willing to turn to them and embrace them as their own.)

But if we live in the light in the same way that God is in the light, we have a relationship with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from every sin. If we say, "We aren't sinful" we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. God is faithful and reliable. If we confess our sins, he forgives them and cleanses us from everything we've done wrong. If we say, "We have never sinned," we turn God into a liar and his Word is not in us. 1 John 1: 7‑10 GWT

If you have sinned, you will be forgiven. So admit your sins to each other, and pray for each other so that you will be healed. Prayers offered by those who have God's approval are effective. James 5: 15‑16 GWT

Seek the Lord while he makes himself available; call to him while he is nearby! The wicked need to abandon their lifestyle and sinful people their plans. They should return to the Lord, and he will show mercy to them, and to their God, for he will freely forgive [and abundantly pardon] them. Isaiah 55: 6‑7 NET

For this is the covenant that I will make with [my people] after that time, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Never again will everyone teach his neighbour or his brother by saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because all of them will know me, from the least important to the most important. If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” [i.e., believing that He hasn’t protected me enough or made me strong enough] For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift [ie, all that we need to overcome]is from above, [ie has already been given] coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of all he created. James 1: 12‑18 NIV

Do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
but shows favour to the humble.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4: 5‑10 NIV

So those who are believers in Christ Jesus can no longer be condemned. The standards of the Spirit, who gives life through Christ Jesus, have set you free from the standards of sin and death. It is impossible to do what God's standards demand because of the weakness our human nature has. But God sent his Son to have a human nature as sinners have and to pay for sin. That way God condemned sin in our corrupt nature. Therefore, we, who do not live by our corrupt nature but by our spiritual nature, are able to meet God's standards. Romans 8: 1‑4 GWT

The one who searches our hearts knows what the Spirit has in mind. The Spirit intercedes for God's people the way God wants him to.

We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God - those whom he has called according to his plan. This is true because he already knew his people and had already appointed them to have the same form as the image of his Son. Therefore, his Son is the firstborn among many children. He also called those whom he had already appointed. He approved of those whom he had called, and he gave glory to those whom he had approved of.

What can we say about all of this? If God is for us, who can be against us? God didn't spare his own Son but handed him over [to death] for all of us. So he will also give us everything along with him. Who will accuse those whom God has chosen? God has approved of them. Who will condemn them? Christ has died, and more importantly, he was brought back to life. Christ has the highest position in heaven. Christ also intercedes for us.

What will separate us from the love Christ has for us? Can trouble, distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, or violent death separate us from his love?

As Scripture says: "We are being killed all day long because of you. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered."

The one who loves us gives us an overwhelming victory in all these difficulties. I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love which Christ Jesus our Lord shows us. We can't be separated by death or life, by angels or rulers, by anything in the present or anything in the future, by forces or powers in the world above or in the world below, or by anything else in creation. Romans 8: 27‑39 GWT
