Paradoxical nature of God’s Truths

(One of the ways in which the term, paradox, is used is to describe a truth whose expression lies hidden within an apparent contradiction. In a paradox the message and its meaning doesn’t always make immediate sense in terms of everyday reason and logic. There is something paradoxical about a number of spiritual truths that the bible seeks to convey, where the intuitive element of an enquiring heart - one that is open and responsive to God - is needed for even beginning to understand something of the reality and fullness of their meaning.)

 

An example: Believing is Seeing:


(We will have heard it expressed: “I will believe it when I see it.” It is often summed up as, ‘Seeing is believing’, and it can be a wise caution about much in everyday life. But we know that there can be something paradoxical about dealing with some of life’s more painful and challenging experiences. When we encounter tragedy and significant loss, for example, we know that it prolongs and complicates grief if we try to ignore and quickly get past painful emotions, but that if we can acknowledge and face them, we will eventually memorialize and heal and come through it. There is something similarly paradoxical about the way the bible speaks of the need to first ‘believe’ in order to ‘know’ the spiritual realities of God in our lives.)

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1: 12‑13 NIV

The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 1 John 5:10 NASB

For Christ did not send me [Paul] to baptise, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1: 17‑30 NIV

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. James 1: 9‑10 NIV
